NDPT concludes its second Working Committee Meeting

Dekyiling (Dehradun): A three-day Second Working Committee Meeting of the National Democratic Party of Tibet (NDPT) was successfully concluded on June 29 at Dekyiling Tibetan Settlement in Dehradun, India.

The meeting was held from 27th to 29th June 2007, in which several agendas, including how to increase the effectiveness of NDPT and enlarge political activities were thoroughly discussed.

The meeting was chaired by the NDPT President, Mr Chime Yungdrung and was attended by more than 55 participants from 23 regional chapters of the party. The participants included executives, representatives and coordinators of Dimapur, Ladakh, Manali, Dekyiling, Mussoorie, Delhi, Dharamsala, Goa, Pokhra (Nepal), Hyderabad, Salugara, Ravangla, Shimla and other regional chapters of the party.

In the opening ceremony, His Eminence Khenchen Jigme Namgyal Rinpoche, the Chief Abbot, of Mindrolling monastery, presided over as the Chief Guest and Mr. Jingar Pon Damdul, the Welfare Officer of Dekyilling Tibetan Settlement was invited as the special guest.

The program started with Tibetan National Anthem and Tibetan Democracy Song.

In his opening speech of the meeting, Mr Chime stated that NDPT is growing in its membership and activities; and he appealed for support in making it a successful political party as intended by its founding members.

He reflected on how during the 1st and 2nd term of NDPT, the organisation’s activities, promotion of democratic ideals and strengthening of Tibet’s cause were confined largely within the Tibetan community in exile. He said that during his presidential term, he expressed intended target of reaching out to Tibetans inside Tibet through the organisation’s activities and democratic education.

Mr. Damdul, the Special Guest, reminded the participants that the initiation of the NDPT was an important move in the advancement of Tibetan Democracy. He said that with all the Tibetan NGOs in exile, full and active participation in the evolving democracy Tibetan democracy can be realised possible through political party like NDPT. He called for Tibetans, especially young Tibetans to take active participation in democratization process of Tibetan political system by initiating self interest and involvement in the Tibetan political affairs. One way of doing it, he said could be by taking rein of the NDPT’s platform.

The National Democratic Party of Tibet (NDPT) was founded on September 2 1994 by Tibetan Youth Congress (TYC) after His Holiness the Dalai Lama suggested TYC to initiate a political party during the VIIIth General Body Meeting of the TYC in 1990.

Currently NDPT has 34 regional chapters and 2500 members, and is the only Tibetan political party in exile. The current president and the executive members of the NDPT(Centrex) are driven to rapidly increase the membership and make a mark in Tibetan society. The momentum of the meeting was a heated and a vibrant participation as it was evident on the first day.

On the concluding third day meeting on 29th June 2007, the Working Committee meeting passed a resolution. The organisation says the Tibetan version of the resolution was made public on the very same day.
