The following “letter to the Editor” appeared in the June 22, 2006 Edition 1 of The Mercury newspaper:

Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao is paying an official visit to South Africa this week during which he meets President Thabo Mbeki and signs an agreement to further develop economic ties.

Being Tibetans deeply concerned with the lack of religious freedom and with the human rights violations experienced by six million Tibetans living under the control of the People’s Republic of China, we appeal to the citizens of South Africa to ask Mbeki to raise the human rights issue of Tibet during his meeting with the Chinese premier.

Placing issues of Tibet on meeting agendas by international leaders will not only encourage the Tibetans striving for human rights, it will help facilitate resolution of the issue of Tibet through dialogue and negotiations as advocated by the Dalai Lama.

A speedy resolution to the issue is in the interests of People’s Republic of China.
