December 2 – The Tibetan Youth Congress said that the Drepung unrest is a case of human rights violation and that it sees the exile government’s efforts for negotiations with China and human rights violation in Tibet as two entirely different issues. The General Secretary of the Tibetan Youth Congress Tsuiltrim Dorjee was reacting to a question from the media as to how it views the Kashag’s appeal to the Tibetan people to maintain peace and stability in Tibet.

Tsuiltrim was speaking at a press conference here. The TYC demanded immediate termination and complete withdrawal of the ‘patriotic reeducation campaign’ in Tibet warning China that further suppression of the Tibetan people’s basic human rights will result in violent upheaval within the Tibetan community.

The largest non-governmental organization called for an immediate release of all the monks and nuns who were arrested following the ‘patriotic reeducation campaign’. The TYC demanded reinstatement of the monks and nuns who had faced expulsion.

The TYC expressed its grave concern over the deputation of Zhang Qingli, former vice-governor of Xinjiang and a close aide of President Hu Jintao, in Tibet as the new Chief of the Tibet Autonomous Region as it fears that preparations are underway for stronger implementation of brutal communist policies in Tibet that have largely succeeded in reducing the other ethnic minorities in China into unthreatening, frightened and disillusioned people.

The TYC said it received reports of similar protest against China at Gharig nunnery near Sera monastery with a strength of 120 nuns.

The TYC urged the Tibetan exile diaspora, friends and supporters of the Tibetan cause and the international community not to lose sight of their commitments to Tibet with politically defined perceptions but to respect the aspirations of the Tibetan people for complete independence unto which their brethrens in Tibet continue to sacrifice their blood and lives.
