“Seminar on Tibet” in Baroda

On 17th, October, 2004, the Tibetan Students’ Association, Baroda (TSAB) had organized a “Seminar on Tibet” at hotel Surya in Baroda, Gujarat. It was started at half past nine in the morning. There were four speakers and the seminar was attended by about fourty Indians including Indian dignitaries and university students.

The president of TSAB, Mr. Tenzin Lobsang welcomed the chief guest Dr. Anil Shreedhar Kane (chairman of India Wind Energy Association, former vice chancellor of M.S. University of Baroda.) and all the speakers with the Tibetan traditional scarf.

The first talk of the seminar was given by Dr. Damodar V. Nene (MBBS doctor) on “Tibet: past and future”. In his talk he stressed mainly to the point that China is threat not only to Tibet and Tibetans but also to India and Indians by bringing the fact of the past history of India with China, especially the 1962 war with China. And he also talked about the nuclearisation of Tibet by China is being threat to India’s security.

The second talk was given by Mr. Tenzin Tsundue (poet and activist of Tibet) on the topic “Freedom in exile”. In his talk he has briefed the Tibetan history and also talked about the present situation in exile. At the same time, he threw light on Tibetan exile govt. and his own ideology towards it.

And it was followed by Miss. Lhadon Tethong (president of “Student for Free Tibet” in America, Canada and Europe) with her slide show which explained how they work for the freedom of Tibet. She inspired the audiences by saying that China is afraid of Tibetan in exile and she said otherwise Chinese govt. would not have meetings to how to react or do away with Tibetan exile govt., various Tibet support groups and Tibetans in Diaspora.

The last talk of the seminar was given by Dr. Bhaskar Vyas (MBBS doctor) and he spoke on “Tibet’s contribution to the humanity at large”. He stated that “Tibet’s lost has been gain to the world”. And he supported his statement with the view that spreading of Tibetan all over the world has taken Buddhism at the door step of everyone. He also added that in the modern atheist but value and meaning seeking civilization, Buddhism is emerging as the religion of 21st century.

They had been four talks and all the talks were followed by question and answer session for fifteen to twenty minutes each.

Finally the chief guest of the seminar Dr. Anil Shreedhar Kane has given a speech for about twenty minutes. Where he inspired the Tibetans by saying that nobody had ever thought of collapsing of the mighty Soviet Union (USSR) but it was collapsed. And in the same way, he expects same kind of changes to the present Chinese govt. (PRC) and thereby he showed imminent hope for the Tibet’s independent. Besides he gave some tips like keeping contact with the Tibetans in Tibet, keeping one’s identity, language etc. to keep the freedom struggle alive.

The seminar was concluded with the vote of thanks from the general secretary of TSAB by presenting mementoes to the chief guest and the speakers. And it actually ended with a lunch to all the guests at two o’clock in the afternoon.
