South African Ambassador to China has car accident in South Africa

On Saturday night, 10 May 2003, the wife and child of the South African ambassador to The People’s Republic of China died in a motor car accident.

The 44-year-old wife of the South African ambassador to China, Nthembu Khubeka, and their 18- month-old baby boy were killed in a road accident in KwaZulu-Natal on Saturday night, police reported.

Police spokesperson Senior Superintendent Mary Martins-Engelbrecht said on Sunday Mr. Khubeka was admitted to the Crompton Hospital in Pinetown the extent of his injuries not yet known.

The accident took place when the family was travelling on the N3 near Pinetown in KwaZulu-Natal shortly before midnight on Saturday.

“The accident occurred when Khubeka apparently collided with an embankment at the side of the road. “His wife and son died instantly,” Martins-Engelbrecht said. The family was travelling from Ladysmith to Durban.

The committee of the Tibet Society of South Africa, a non-profit organisation based in Durban, KwaZulu Natal South Africa, extended their condolence to the ambassador through the South African department of foreign affairs.
