Tibetan MP Honored with ‘Bharat Jyoti’ ( Light of India) Award

Delhi based India’s leading Institutional Organization IIFS (India International Friendship Society) has conferred on Ven. Acharya Tenzin Sherab, Member of Tibetan Parliament in Exile & Principal, Sera Je Secondary School, ‘ Bharat Jyoti’ (Light of India) Award at a glittering Function held at Hotel Taj Residency in Hyderabad on 29th March 2003.

His Excellency former Governor of Tamil Nadu & former Union Cabinet Minister, Shri Bhishma Narayan Singh, presented the Award in presence of Industry Minister of Pondicherry & several members of Indian Parliament and other dignitaries.

Ven. Sherab was honored with this prestigious award for his outstanding contribution to human growth & accomplishment in the field of social, administrative and educational services during his over twenty years leadership as the Principal of Sera Je Secondary School located at Bylakuppe amidst one of the largest Tibetan Refugee Settlements in South India. During his tenure as the Principal of Sera Je Secondary School, Ven. Sherab has raised over sixty million Indian Rupees, which had enabled unprecedented large-scale infrastructure development not only in the School but also in the entire area where 3500 strong Sera Je Monastic Community is based.

The past recipients of the award include former Vice President of India, B.D. Jatti, former India’s Chief Justice P.N. Bhagwati, world famous social worker Mother Teresa, India’s leading industrialist and Rajya Sabha Member, Vijay Mallaya, International Cricketer Sunil Gavaskar, etc.

Earlier, in November last year, the Karnataka Chapter of National Festival Organizing Committee had honored Ven. Sherab as one of the eminent social workers of the year.

Principal Sherab is the first Tibetan National to have achieved this rare privilege of having been honored with above two prestigious national Awards.

After receiving early schooling from local Central Tibetan School, Ven. Sherab joined CIHTS Central Institute of Higher Tibetan Studies at Sarnath. He earned a Master’s Degree in Buddhist philosophy from the Deemed University and topped the merit list. He also did B. Ed. From Annamalai University and has recently earned his Doctorate Ph.D from Mysore University.
