ATHENS, Greece – The European Union criticized China Wednesday over the execution of a 28-year-old Tibetan man condemned for participation in bomb attacks.
“The European Union expresses deep regret and disappointment at the execution of Lobsang Dhondup immediately after (a) … court upheld his death sentence,” a statement said.
The statement was issued in Greece which holds the current presidency of the EU.
Dhondup was executed on Jan. 26 following his conviction for seeking independence for Tibet and involvement in a series of bombings that killed one person.
His fellow defendant, senior Buddhist monk Tenzin Delek Rinpoche had his death sentence suspended.
“The European Union reiterates its concerns on the conditions under which the trial was conducted and … considers this a serious violation of the rights of the two defendants,” the EU statement said.
It added: the EU “urged (China) to review the case against Tenzin Delek Rinponche and expressed as well its expectation that his death sentence will not be upheld.”
