Srinagar, January 31 – The Ladakh region of Jammu and Kashmir is seeing unrest over a death sentence awarded to a Tibetan Buddhist leader by Chinese authorities.

Buddhist majority Leh town in Ladakh even observed a strike to protest the verdict for Chogyal Lama who was accused by the Chinese of preaching secession in Tibet, reports here said.

This is not the first time the Chinese have cracked down on Buddhists owing allegiance to Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama, who now lives in exile in India.

The Ladakh Buddhist Association (LBA) and the Tibetan Refugees’ Association had jointly called the protest in Leh.

Buddhists are in a majority in Leh and had strong religious and cultural affinities with Tibet until Chinese rule in the 1950s.
