DHARAMSHALA, Nov. 28: A Tibetan youth named Yonten has died after committing self immolation in Ngaba town situated in the county by the same name in occupied Tibet’s Amdo region in the so-called Sichuan Province on Wednesday, November 27, 2019.

According to information given by Dharamshala based Kirti Jhepa Monastery's monks Lobsang Yeshi and Kanyag Tsering, Yonten set himself ablaze around 4 pm local time yesterday to protest against the repressive policies of China inside occupied Tibet. The monks report that the Tibetan youth has perished from his injuries.

The 24 years old hailed from the Meruma township in Ngaba where his father Sodhon and mother Tsekho Kyi still reside. Yonten was a former monk who later disrobed to help his family in their nomadic livelihood.

The sources also said that the situation in Ngaba is tense and is under a lock down following the incident. “We have no further information on whether the body of the deceased has been handed over to the family or not since all channels are now blocked,” the monks said in a statement.

This marks the 165th Tibetan to self immolate in occupied Tibet and in exile since 2008. Thupten Ngodup (2008) and Tapey (2009) were the first Tibetans to self immolate in exile and inside Tibet, respectively.
