DHARAMSHALA, Oct. 8: The President of the exile Tibetan government known officially as the Central Tibetan Administration, Dr. Lobsang Sangay on Sunday, said that European stakeholders and partners in the ambitious ‘One Belt One Road’ project should be vary of the China’s overall intent.

The Tibetan President who was speaking at the ‘Forum 2000’ conference at the Czech capital of Prague on October 7 spoke on ‘The Global Challenge of China’ and also participated in the panel discussion on the topic ‘China Beyond its Borders: From Tibetans to the Belt and Road’.

Dr. Sangay said that Tibet should be seen as the blueprint of how China encroaches upon other nations with the lure of economic prosperity, adding that stakeholders in the OBOR project will face similar situations as that of Tibet in the early 1950’s.

He recalled that China specifically built a silver coin factory in Chengdu to supply silver coins to Tibetans in exchange for building roads in Tibet and later the same roads were strategically used in the invasion and logistical support of troops and weaponry into Tibet.

Dr. Sangay urged the international community to support the movement of Tibet that has not resorted to violence. “Support for Tibet means support for non-violence, dialogue, freedom, human rights, and democracy. The world, which is beset by violent conflicts, is looking for models to follow and Tibet’s non-violent, peaceful and dialogue is that ideal model against or violent, militancy and terrorist model. If you don’t support the Tibet model, it means you support the violent model of conflict resolution,” the President was quoted as saying.

The Tibetan President who is on a three-nation tour will also visit Finland and Slovakia, his office said.
