TYC to embark on ‘Bharat Jagran Yatra’

DHARAMSHALA, November 30: Coinciding with the World Human Rights Day on December 10, the largest Tibetan organization the Tibetan Youth Congress (TYC) will begin a nationwide grassroots level campaign, ‘Bharat Jagran Yatra’, to spread awareness on the Tibetan issue among the Indian people, to garner their support and to urge the Indian government to review their stand on Tibet issue.

TYC President Tenzing Jigme told a press conference at the organization’s head office of the organization in McLeod Ganj today that along with the awareness campaign, the organization will also carry out an appeal campaign.

The three main appeals include appealing to the Indian people to urge their MLAs to take up the Tibet issue in their respective legislative assembly; to the Indian government to review its policy and recognize Tibet as historically an Independent country currently under the China’s occupation; and to urge Indians and Tibetans to boycott Chinese products.

“The month long campaign will start simultaneously from three different cities - Mcleod Ganj, Salugara and Chennai on December 10. A four-member sub-committee of the organization including two executive members each will head the campaign, which will cover over 150 cities and towns across 22 states of the country,” said Jigme.

Since it is an awareness campaign, the largest pro-independence organization has arranged 10 lakh pamphlets in six different languages – Tibetan, Hindi, English, Nepali, Bengali and Kannada, to distribute. They have also plans to organize public rally, press conferences, talk in colleges, signing of petitions and other advocacy works. TYC plans to submit the signed petitions to the central government in New Delhi at the end of the campaign.

The documents carry information about Tibet, why Chinese products should be boycotted, affects of Chinese policies on Tibet’s environment and how it affects India and Southeast Asia and how Tibet’s independence assures India’s security.

“Along with the documents we have DVDs on the self-immolations taking place in Tibet since 2009 and a docudrama on life story of His Holiness the Dalai Lama. We believe that through these documents and DVDs we will be able reach and not only educate the minds but also the hearts of the Indian people,” Jigme said.

In places where Tibetans have settled or where Tibetans have set up winter sweater businesses, TYC will hold talks and candle light vigils as well.

“As of now we have tentatively set the campaign duration to 30 days. However, it could take more than expected. The conclusion will be finalized among the sub-committee heading the campaign in different regions. The last leg of the campaign will be in New Delhi where we will carry out advocacy works,” said TYC VP Tamdrin Serchoe.
