DHARAMSHALA, APR. 18: The premier football tournament of the Tibetan diaspora, the Gyalyum Chemo Memorial Gold Cup 2017 will feature five time champion Dhondupling FC (Clement town) from Dehradun and Tashiling Himalaya FC (Darjeeling) in the final game of the hard fought tournament in Kollegal Tibetan settlement in South India.

The Tashiling Himalaya FC and Dhondupling FC advance to the all-important final game today beating TDL FC and Rabgyaling FC respectively in the semi-final games. While Tashiling Himalaya FC beat TDL FC through penalty shootout (3-2), Dhondupling scored the only goal converting a penalty awarded in the regulated time during their match against Rabgyaling FC.

The team from Clement town, the most decorated team in the tournament’s history, has advanced to the last stage deservedly through their scoring proficiency; the team shares the honor of top scoring team with DYSA Mundgod while their striker forward Jigme Norbu takes the lead with four goals scored so far in the tournament. This year’s edition features 15 teams from various parts of India representing Tibetan settlements such as host Kollegal, Odisha, Mundgod and Bylakuppe among others and educational institutions such as the Dalai Lama Institute and TCV school.

The top scoring game between PUSC Odisha and Tsampa FC, Paris saw a total of nine goals, the former beating the latter by 6 goals to 3 in an entertaining game. A total of 62 goals were scored in during the initial group stage games and the knock out games.

The 2017 GCMGC tournament was hosted by the Dhondhenling Tibetan settlement of Kollegal in Karnataka state, South Indian since April 8. The tournament was broadcast live in HD quality through dedicated YouTube channel in addition to introducing the first ever smart-phone App that further extends the tournament’s reach for Tibetans in exile around the world. The internet service for the live streaming was provided by Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL).

The football tournament started back in 1981 in the memory of the late mother of the Tibetan leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Dekyi Tsering, is organized by the apex Tibetan sports authority, Tibetan National Sports Association (TNSA) in an annual event where the Tibetan diaspora’s most loved sport of football finds a steady platform.
The final game between Dhondupling FC and Tashiling Himalaya FC will be played tomorrow.
