DHARAMSHALA, December 12: The US President-elect Donald Trump has hinted at his government not necessarily bound by the ‘One China Policy’ that the United States stuck to since 1979.

“I fully understand the 'one China' policy, but I don't know why we have to be bound by a 'one China' policy unless we make a deal with China having to do with other things, including trade," Trump told Fox News on Sunday regarding US’s relation with Taiwan under that policy.

The phone call between Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen and Trump earlier this month was the first time a US President or President-elect has contacted a Taiwanese leader since the diplomatic ties were cut-off in 1979 after the US adopted the ‘one-China policy’ during President Jimmy Carter’s administration.

Trump also went a step further by criticizing China for its currency policies, especially devaluation of the Yuan, building a ‘massive fortress’ in South China Sea and its incorporative nature toward the North Korea issue.

Following the move that irked Beijing, Trump’s latest comment on one-China policy was met with harsh response from China. Calling it ‘naivety for diplomacy’, state-run news daily Global Times has criticized Trump for not knowing the ‘importance of the policy’.

“If Trump gave up the One China policy, publicly supported Taiwan independence and wantonly sold weapons to Taiwan, China would have no grounds to partner with Washington on international affairs and contain forces hostile to the US. In response to Trump's provocations, Beijing could offer support, even military assistance to US foes,” the daily wrote in its editorial.

The policy refers to the idea that there is only one state called China and that Taiwan is break- away province and a part of the mainland. According to it, every nation seeking diplomatic ties with the China must break ties with Taiwan and vice versa.
