DHARAMSHALA, March 23: The Tibetan Medical and Astrological Institute (Mentseekhang), headquartered here with over 50 branches all over India, on Sunday turned 54 years since its inception in exile.

Kaul Singh Thakur, the Health Minister of Himachal Pradesh, presided over as the Chief Guest at a function marking the 54th anniversary of the institute that was set up under the guidance of His Holiness the Dalai Lama. Also present were Tibetan PM Lobsang Sangay, Speaker of the Tibetan Parliament Penpa Tsering, Lahaul Spiti MLA Ravi Thakur, Tibetan Health Minister Tsering Wangchuk and officials of state government and CTA.

Health Minister Kaul Singh Thakur expressed his appreciation for the Tibetan medical system based on ancient healing science. He said the treatment based on Tibetan medical system also carries the blessings of His Holiness the Dalai Lama. Singh also announced the allotment of 30 acre of land in Lahaul Spiti region for cultivation of medicinal herbs for the institute.

Singh also said that the state government will allot reserved seats for Tibetans in the three new medical colleges that it is setting up.

The Tibetan PM and the Speaker of the Tibetan parliament thanked the Himachal Pradesh government for its assistance to the Tibetan people, and called for efforts on the part of the state government to continue its assistance to the institute.

The Director of the TMAI, Tashi Tsering, said that his institute objects the Chinese government’s appeal to the United Nations to classify the Tibetan Medical system as Intangible Cultural Heritage. He said a petition has been submitted to the UN in this regard.

Staff members with more than twenty years’ service to the institute and students with excellence in studies were also honored with souvenirs during the function.
