March 10, Rome: Tibetans and Tibet support groups commemorated the 49th anniversary of the Tibetan people’s uprising against the Chinese occupation of Tibet. Tibetans and many supporters protested in front of the Chinese embassy in Rome under heavy rain. Tibetan community president Mr Thupten Tenzin read the 10th march statement of H.H the Dalai Lama and expressed support to the ‘Return march to Tibet’ from Dharamsala.

In the evening the Tibetan freedom torch that arrived from Athens to Italy was lit up in front of the office of the Italian national Olympic committee. The President of Tibetan community and Vice president of Association Italy-Tibet, Mr. Cardelli Claudio was received by the National Olympic committee office where they submitted two appeal letters calling on the IOC to release the Panchen lama before the Olympic games and to
improve human rights in Tibet. Letters were signed respectively by more than 20 associations and members of Team Tibet, Italy.

The freedom torch led a long march from Piazza Navona to Piazza Venezia in the center of Rome. Over five hundred people participated in the march despite the heavy downpour. The march ended in front of the office of the UNO in Italy where the President of Tibetan Women’s Association in Italy, Ms. Dechen Dolkar concluded with a strong call to support the Tibetan cause and thanked UNICOBAS which is the main organizing committee with Tibetan community of Italy and Tibetan Women’s Association with more than twenty associations
that collectively worked for the event.
