Readers' Comments on "His Jewish mother calls him the Deli Lama"
A mensch-in-the-making, his great aunt had pronounced on the day of his bar mitzvah. It wasn't just his flawless Hebrew. Or that he looked so all-American in his midnight blue suit from Barneys with his sandy- blond curls combed flat beneath his yarmulke....

Subject: Surya Das

Surya is a Momma's Boy plain and simple -- the man tried to challenge me once (spiritually that is) and when push came to shove, he melted just like butter and loved every single minute of it!

He is also a liar - he lied to his sangha and many others allowing them all to believe he was married in May of 2001 but was really married a year earlier and continues to lie allowing his sangha to believe and perpetuate this lie. Ask one of his students and see what they say and then ask him for the truth and see what he says vs. what they say/believe.

Look in at the acknowledgment of this book “Awakening the Buddha Within.” He names two “special” women in his life – two girlfriends – and one went on to marry him. I wonder if that is how they found out about each other right there in black and white???

There is a myth that his students tell of how poor Surya could never find a mate because all he met were “student-types” and how he had to go outside of Buddhism to find a wife and was alone for so many years – oh, poor Surya. All bullshit – Surya even names his two “special friends” – so there you go boys – become a Lama and you can have two or maybe more women at a time!

He is a self-proclaimed “control” freak. Moreover, he loves to say the word “F***” when giving teachings.

He brags about his Tantric practice, w/his master looking on, embracing his consort, and describes it as not some “hot F***!”
Wow, what other Dharma teacher would have the balls talk about “hot” F***s at a Dzogchen workshop at the Omega Institute in NY State?

He considers himself quite the ladies man and flirts with young, old, fat and skinny – doesn’t matter to Surya as long as he can steal some innocent energy.

He also takes advantage of female students by astral projecting and enjoying himself (Oh, sorry Surya was I not suppose to tell – it’s OK I’m sure you can just tell everyone I’m insane or stupid – and since you’re the self-proclaimed “beloved American Lama” everyone will believe you… yes sir-ree it’s all about you.

The man is a coward as far as I’m concerned and I say bring it on Surya – you’re nothing but a Momma’s Boy.

kudos lama surya. and shame to those buffoon-tibetans who criticize him. lama surya had spend much time, money, and energy to get to where he is right now. in some ways it seems like he has succeeded. so kudos again, lama surya. i would say this anybody who succeed in what he does.
so this is none of your buissness my fellow uncapbale tibetans. you are jelous of him. ha, what a sad thing. it seems like most tibetans seem psychotic to me; are there really sane ones left? maybe the dalai lama, okay only one then. and the rest are buffoons.

I think Surya Das' story tells good deal of the complexity of Buddhism in the West. This also tells us something of how our Western friends coping and enhancing their spiritual development in the backdrop of strong traditional and conservative community.

I admire that Surya Das benefited from Buddhist teaching and I have no doubt that it surely did as the teaching itself had been useful for such individulas over 2000 years. So questioning of his faith and the validity of the teaching would only make us a half-baked ass, especially when we claim that we are Tibetans and that we are familiar with the teaching.

However, as a fellow Buddhist faithful one, and admirer of the teaching of Buddha, I would like to suggest Surya and others that Buddhism is not bound by nation, race or gender. One of the best thing about Buddhism is that you could incorporate it into your daily life without sacrifying your identidy or community values. Budhism worked well in Tibetan community which was very conservative before Buddhist period. Therefore, I am sure that it would work well with Jewish community for it teaches love and love of all being. In short, Surya should consider himself as a Jewish Budhist rather than try to separate himself from his root community.

I think one of the essential part of being Buddhist is seeing everything relatives and that it rejects the notion of perminence and fixation. The middle way notion would help the Jewish community in approaching life with a bit more fund and humour.

Therefore, I wish Surya my best and I pray sincerely that Surya would bring the teaching of love and compassion to Jewish community and help them to heal their wounds and pain through the practice of this marvelous Buddhichita. May all beings be relieved from pain and may all Buddhas protect this wonderful son of Surya Das and help him to reach million of people with the teaching of love and compassion, like delivering cool fresh water to the millions of people in the hot desert who are suffering from heat and thirst.

Please Surya try to find the commmon ground between Judaism and Buddhism to bring the two faithes closer. I think the budhist have a lot of things to learn from the follower of Judaism. Perhaps while Surya teaches buddhist teaching to the people who are learning about Buddhism, he could also teach some of the valuable teaching of Judaism to Buddhist followers too. Through these, Suryas could benefit more people.

I don't think as Tibetans we should be so quick to judge and discount someone who is trying to promote Tibetan Buddhism. I think the previous emails that criticize Surya Das are counter to Tibetan Buddhism -- they are being judgemental and not open and certainly there wasn't much compassion. So who is more buddhist: these tibetans or the jewish guy that practises buddhism day to day?? I say to people that I'm Buddhist By Birth but I am striving to become more buddhist every day in actions and words, especially now that I have a small child who I want to be a good role-model for. I think anyone that tries to promote buddhist principles or simply loving compassion for that matter, whether Tibetan or westerner should be commended. Just because we call it Tibetan Buddhism doesn't mean it should only be for Tibetans -- its only a label! Wishing all good Karma!

Just a regular guy from Long Island...and look where he is now. Is this surprising? Not really. It did not happen overnight. Instead, it has taken him 30 years of learning, and study with many of the most exemplary and well-respected Tibetan teachers, and commitment to consecutive 3-year retreats, with the end result of all his students being karmically brought together to learn from him, deepening their meditation practice. One only has to meet with Lama Surya Das in person to realize his authenticity and heartfelt caring for others. In his presence one becomes aware of his true intentions of more happiness and less suffering for all beings and the World. He is well-known for benefiting so many Western students, in their spiritual development and self-empowerment, through his wonderful writing and unique style of teaching of the Dharma and Dzogchen. Not only a most competent teacher, he is also an example of how to live one's life in a more virtuous and ethical way, having founded a council of Ethics on which he and other Western teachers participate with HH the XIVth Dalai. And now, to have the most auspicious 100 day retreat beginning in September at the new center, Osel Ling (outside Austin, TX) founded in honor of his beloved teacher Nyoshul Khenpo, is such a blessing. With much gratitude I pray that Lama Surya live a long, healthy, happy, and productive life in order to benefit as many beings as possible! :-)

People like Surya Das really make me sad. First of all, the religion of Tibetan Buddhism suffers so much in Tibet. Then because of its latent helpfulness and its greatest ambassador, HH the XIVth Dalai Lama, it has gained so much popularity in the west.
Surya Das is not the first one to participate in the prostitution of Tibetan Buddhism by cashing his accidental but well planned chips of spiritual claim. Us Tibetans should voice our opinion about people who take advantage of our religion be it Tibetans or non-Tibetans. High time we should call a spade a spade and not be afraid. After studying our religion ourselves and not indulging in libel but with the motivation to see something be done about the prostitution of Buddhism.
