Obama is fortunate to call Yeshe Norbu a good friend, and he should enhance this friendship by always taking a strong stance for the rights of the Tibetan people living in the three provinces. Economic collaboration with China should be directly linked to internationally monitored human rights improvements.

I'm glad Pres. Obama attended the National Prayer Breakfast along with His Holiness in their first public appearance together. But remember that former Pres. George Bush not only appeared in public w/ His Holiness at the Congressional Gold Medal ceremony in 2007 but stood and sat right next to Him.

I hope Obama's symbolic support for His Holiness will translate to more US support for Tibet. In particular, the US should host a multilateral summit on Tibet & invite both govts and NGOs. And the US should insist on a consulate in Lhasa to better monitor events inside Tibet.
