I met my old friend Sonam Topgyal la last summer – June 25th to be exact. He was in a bad way. Definitely cancer. I suspected stomach cancer of a kind, but could not bring myself to ask. He was weak from his last chemotherapy, but seemed glad to see me. As always we talked about Tibet and the...

Subject: A Selfless & Dedicated Kalon Tripa ever!
Jan 28 2013 02:58 AM

During my short stay in Gangkyi, Dharamsala,as a civilian Tibetan Govt. Employee, I had the rare honor of meeting with late Kalon Tripa, Sonam Topgyal la. It's the most fitting tribute to the great soul of this man to remember him as selfless and dedicated person who devoted his whole life for the welfare of Tibetan People. He will be genuinely missed as a irreplaceable asset as a man of most unassuming character! I have no doubt that this man is set to be reborn as another fortunate human being at the least, if not more!

May Sonam Tobgyal la rest in peace, on his way to an excellent rebirth for the benefit of all sentient beings. It is heartening to read of a life such as his, lived virtuously for the benefit of others. I regret that I never had the chance to make his acquaintance, but nevertheless, I send my prayers particularly to those missing him now.
