Readers' Comments on "SELF-IMMOLATION AND BUDDHISM – by Jamyang Norbu"
The Yiddish word “chutzpah”, pronounced “huspa”, has the exact same meaning as the Tibetan word “hamba”, and even shares a passing tonal quality to it. Leo Rosten, the humorist, defined chutzpah as “that quality enshrined in a man who, having killed his mother and father, throws himself on the mercy of the court because he is an orphan.”...

Subject: why self amolitions have escalated in Tibet?
Jan 16 2012 04:03 AM

Hello Friends,
We must focus in an analytical way as to why the self amolitions and other such things have escalated in chinese occuppied tibet in the recent years???
obviously the natural answer is that since the chinese brutality and atrocities have increased in tibet and so has the reaction of tibetans in tibet.
but then again what is the reason for the heightened mistreatment and persecution of Tibetans in tibet by the communist chinese government?
i would like to welcome comments and feed back from readers on this last question and begin a open discussion on neutral grounds.
thank you.

Subject: Lodi Gyari, who he is working for?
Jan 15 2012 09:04 PM

ICT, in its heyday, worked very effectively campaigning for the cause of Tibet. It's downfall as Organization is assured if its board continue to Keep Lodi Gyari as its chairman. And that would be loss for Tibetans. Recently, His holiness was shown, indrectly, promoting the Australian chef competition. Have ICT, more precisely Lodi Gyari a role in it as he was also to be seen strutting in the show. If this guy has his say, he would have appear HHDL appear for Dancing with the stars to make some quick buck for ICT.

CCP has the gall to throw in their pronouncements of anything related to religion leave alone BUDDHISM. “Guilty conscious pricks the mind”.

Subject: Do not forget the bigger picture!

As much as I admire Jamyang Norbu la's intellect and semshook, I would like to remind him that his writings should not aim at ridiculing individual(Tibetans and Tibet supporters) who happened to have different ideas/approach than him. JN la may not agree with Samdhong Rinpoche, ICT, CTA, Lobsang Sangay, and others but trying to prove them wrong all the time is not worthwhile for our cause. I fear that your writings will eventually cease to provide encouragement to the the young rangzen warriors. We must not forget the bigger goal that is to resolve Tibet issue before its too late. And for that, we need to work together.

Tenzin Nyendak.

I truly admire Jamyang Norbu's sense of Tibetan nationalism. I absolutely agree that self-immolations in Tibet are deeds of great courage and bravery. Such acts are selfless and pure. In spite of all these facts, questioning, 'Is it a Buddhist act or not?' is wrong. The question should be of a social one. Based on the communist Chinese system which is cruel and brutal, it's subjects (from occupied or their own) acts in desperation.

Subject: Why would rather die of Self Immolation then die under Chinese govt's silent torture and pain
Jan 06 2012 09:59 PM

Chinese govt feels uneasy when facing the world about Tibetans ultimate sacrifice of their body for freedom but they DON'T feel anything WHEN MILLIONS OF TIBETANS DIED UNDER CHINESE GUN AND TORTURE, SEVERAL THOUSANDS TIBETANS ARE STILL SUFFERING SILENTLY IN CHINESE JAILS AND MOST OF THEM DIE IN SILENT IN CHINESE JAILS.Self immolation of Tibetans in Tibet show Tibetans desperate situation under the Chinese govt. Beijing authorities should take a hard look into real situation of Tibetans in Tibet instead of using their violent torture and death of Tibetans.

Subject: Self immolation of Tibetans in Tibet speaks about the pain and suffering Tibetans going under the most Brutal Regime on this earth "the Chinese govt"

Jamyang la great article, What does the Chinese authorities understand about Buddhism when they are ATHEIST and don't allow freedom to worship any religion in China. According to Buddhist Religion if one person's sacrifice can bring more benefit or save lives of thousands of people then that person's sacrifice is worth. I really don't understand sometimes people working in ICT, who they really are.

I have no qualms calling Jamyang Norbu La an "Irritable Genious!" As one can see that he is truly a very learned individual who doesn't hold back on anything or anyone when it comes to Tibet. But at the same time, he has failed to rise to the occassion when we needed him direly, such as when we were going through the Kalon Tripa election.I mean, it would've been truly an amazing historical event in our Exile history if he had stood on the podiums and debated against our Kalon Tripa who is a great leader as well.
I hope someday that he will serve our TGIE in some capacity, and hopefully as the next Kalon Tripa!
