Subject: UN Human Rights Council ineffective
Sep 22 2010 12:26 AM

I'm glad that human rights NGOs have demanded to hold the Chinese Govt accountable for its human rights violations, including those in Tibet & E. Turkestan (Xinjiang), as well as in China. Unfortunately, the UN Human Rights Council (HRC) was designed for failure.

The HRC is made up member states. The membership rotates periodically. Many of the members of the HRC are themselvse among the worst human rights violators, including China. How exacly are countries who violate human rights going to criticize themselves or criticize other human rights violators, esp. when they could just join together & agree never to criticize anybody, except small countries w/ little political influence at the UN?

The HRC has proven ineffective & useless since it was formed. Instead the UN should set up a separate human rights commission made up of not member states but individual who work directly for the UN organization. That way they can conduct independent investigations and make independent reports & conclusions. And this way big countries who violate human rights, like China & Russia, can't use their influence to bully other nations into silence.
