DHARAMSHALA, July 6: The Tibetan leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama who turned 84 today implored people to practice compassion and be compassionate in their daily lives and said that such actions would be the best birthday gift for him.

While speaking to groups in Taiwan, Singapore and Malaysia from his residence via teleconference today, the 84-year-old said, “If you truly love me, then keep in your minds my three commitments, and whatever you do, where ever you live, try to create compassionate environment. Compassionate society, then religious harmony.

“Then tell more people that Tibetan knowledge, which comes from the Nalanda tradition is quite useful. So whether believer or non believer, it is worthwhile that this Tibetan knowledge is kept as a part of academic subject. So if you practice, if you pay more attention, that’s the best gift for my birthday.”

The Dalai Lama did not take part in the celebratory ceremony that the exile Tibetan government known officially as the Central Tibetan Administration (CTA) held here at the Thekchen Choling Tsuglakhang. Thousands of Tibetans and people form other nationalities gathered as the mood of the congregation turned one of gratitude and concern for the health of the aging Tibetan leader.

The heads of both the executive and legislative branches of the CTA urged that during the year which is considered as “obstacle year” for the octogenarian Tibetan leader, Tibetans must indulge in meritorious deed and enrich our collective karma for the pacification of obstacles for their leader.

Chief guest for the official ceremony Kishan Kapoor, a veteran BJP politician and Member of the Lok Sabha (lower house of Indian Parliament) hailed the Dalai Lama as a “great soul” whose presence has over the years changed the landscape of his native Dharamshala and brought it in the global context.

The Tibetan leader considered as a global figure for peace, reconciliation and non-violence is a Nobel laureate. Debate over his age and reincarnation has gathered momentum over the last few years as observers say that he is intertwined with the fate of the Tibetan political movement and China’s legitimacy to global soft power. He fled Tibet in 1959 following China’s invasion of Tibet and has been living in Dharamshala for more than 60 years.
