DHARAMSHALA, July 6: Former civil servants of the exile Tibetan government known officially as the Central Tibetan Administration on Friday offered Tenshug or the long life prayer to the aging Tibetan leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama here at the Thekchen Choling Tsuglakhang temple.

Hundreds of former CTA staff and bureaucrats gathered at the temple a day before his birthday for the ceremony to espouse their reverence and solidarity for the Tibetan leader who turn 84 years of age today. Among them were Cabinet Ministers, Chief Justices, Secretaries and others from all across the world.

The Dalai Lama while expressing his gratitude for the sponsors of the Tenshug said he is determined to live as long as he can and continue his work.

He said, “I think that I may live into my 90s or around 100. So there are indications that I may be able to live around 100 so I always pray for the sentient beings and dharma. I have been able to help many people including Tibetans so if I could live longer I would be able to serve more sentient beings and the teaching of the Buddha so that it may be revived in those places which it had spread but declined and that it could spread to other countries where it has not spread as Je Tsongkhapa made this prayer moved by compassion.

So rather than doing what is practical in this life that I could do to serve sentient beings and the Dharma and just aspire for another life that may not be practical so I hope to live around 100 and that’s my determination.”

Tashi Tsering, a former body guard of the Dalai Lama who escorted the Tibetan leader through his escape into India in 1959 said that he feels “happy” for being able to contribute and participate in the offering made for the long life and well being of the octogenarian leader.

The Buddhist ceremony of Tenshug for the Dalai Lama have now been offered on an increasing frequency by the Tibetan people, more so after his brush with ailments like that of a few weeks ago when he was hospitalised for a “minor infection in the lung”. His office and the 84-year old said that he has regained fitness following the setback in his health.
