DHARAMSHALA, May 17: The Intelligence Bureau (IB) headquarters in New Delhi has indicated at terrorists plotting to attack Buddhist and Hindu temples on Buddha Purnima, also known as the Buddha’s birthday, in the eastern Indian state of West Bengal and neighboring Bangladesh by fundamentalist Islamist terror groups.
The IB, in an official circular, warned of a female suicide bomber on Buddha Purnima which falls on Saturday.
The circular dated May 14, stated that security agencies should exercise “highest level of alertness and preparedness’.
Indian sleuths have warned that Jamaatul Mujahedin Bangladesh (JMB) may deploy female suicide bombers posing as pregnant woman to attack on Buddhist temples in the region. Similarly, female operatives of ISIS (Islamic State of Iraq and Syria) might also attack Hindu Temples in Bangladesh, the IB HQ in Delhi said.
A state-wide alert has been issued in West Bengal on the order of the Central government and security has reportedly been beefed up at Buddhist and Hindu temples in the state.
In January last year, three crude bombs were discovered, one of which detonated in the vicinity of the Bodh Gaya temple in Bihar which is considered the holiest site by Buddhists. The same temple was attacked in July 2013 with a series of low intensity bomb blasts which injured three Buddhist priests.
