DHARAMSHALA, May 1: His Holiness the Dalai Lama has sent a condolence letter yesterday to Charlene Lugar, the wife of former US Sen. Richard Lugar who passed away on April 28, 2019.

In the letter, His Holiness said he was saddened by the news of the demise of the senator and offered his condolence to the surviving members of the family.

The former senator passed away at his home state Indiana at the age of 87.

His Holiness described Lugar as someone who sincerely dedicated his whole life to the service of American people, and also as a leader who rose above political differences, for which he was duly appreciated by his colleagues.

“As a Tibetan, I thank him for his support to the Tibetan cause for many years. On my earlier visit to Washington, he extended huge support when I met with members of the upper chamber of the United States Congress.”

His Holiness remarked that the support received from Lugar and his fellow senators had served to strengthen the determination of Tibetans to nonviolently strife for the freedom struggle and not lose hope.

Richard Green Lugar, a member of the Republican party served as a senator from Indiana from 1977 to 2013, making him one of the longest-serving members of the US Senate.
