DHARAMSHALA, April 16: The push for Indian government to confer Bharat Ratna upon His Holiness the Dalai Lama is gaining momentum across the political spectrum.

After Nitish Kumar and Gopalkrishna Gandhi, former Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Shanta Kumar, the head of the All Party Indian Parliamentary Forum for Tibet (APIPFT)
reiterated the demand yesterday with a letter to Home Minister Raj Nath Singh.

Kumar last made the same demand publicly during his book launch in November 2018 at the Dalai Lama temple in the presence of the Tibetan leader.

In a press release yesterday, Kumar said the letter was signed by 200 sitting members of parliament from diverse political parties to have the country’s highest civilian honour conferred upon His Holiness the Dalai Lama.

The forum unanimously passed a resolution in November last year urging Prime Minister Narendra Modi to honour His Holiness the Dalai Lama with Bharat Ratna.

Shanta Kumar said His Holiness the Dalai Lama has been carrying out a peaceful struggle for the Tibetan people for more than six decades.

“His contribution has been acknowledged across the globe. He was also awarded Nobel Peace Prize in 1989. The parliamentarians have made a conscious decision to demand Bharat Ratna for him,” said the former CM.

The highest civilian honor of India has been conferred to non-Indians in the past including Nelson Mandela.
