Dalai Lama gives teachings to devotees in Taiwan through webstream

DHARAMSHALA, April 1: His Holiness the Dalai Lama on Sunday gave teachings to devotees in Taiwan through web streaming. The discourse on Gonpo Lhudup’s Uma Rinchen Trengwa was broadcast live to over 6000 people in Taiwan at two different venues in Taipei on Sunday.

The Dalai Lama told devotees to embrace the teachings with an investigative and analytical perspective and not just out of faith. He said that real growth in a practitioner can only be attained through analytical meditation and by investigating the teachings in order to absorb the true meaning.

The Tibetan leader who has curtailed his overseas engagements said that his age as well as the political situation in Taiwan has resulted in him resorting to modern technology to reach out to his followers.

“On the one hand, it is difficult for me to travel in long flights at this age. On the other, due to the political situation in Taiwan, I feel uncomfortable if there is no understanding with China for my visit, but I am happy that I can reach and converse with my followers in Taiwan with the help of modern technology,” the 83-year-old said.

This is the first time that the Tibetan leader has reached out to followers in Taiwan through live webcast. Earlier this month, he engaged with followers in Mongolia through the same platform.

While Taiwan is claimed by China as its territory, Mongolia is heavily reliant economically on China. Beijing has been consistent in their effort to minimize the influence of the Dalai Lama in the Buddhist community of the two nations.

Earlier this month, Taiwanese legislators launched a petition to invite the Tibetan leader before the end of 2019 to the country. Ruling party chief of Taiwan, Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Secretary-General Luo Wen-jia, welcomed the move and said, “We welcome the Dalai Lama making a trip to Taiwan. He should have the freedom and the right to go wherever he wants — even to his homeland.”

Tibet Religious Foundation of the Dalai Lama chairman Dawa Tsering said that while he and fellow Tibetans look forward to the proposed visit by the Tibetan leader, the visit should not rub the wrong way as far as cross-strait relations are concerned.

“We do not want to make trouble for the DPP government... It would be up to the government to decide,” he said.
