DHARAMSHALA, Mar. 8: The exile Tibetan government known officially as the Central Tibetan Administration undertook events here today that highlighted and remembered the resistance of Tibetans in the years since Tibet’s illegal occupation by China in 1959. The commemorative events come days ahead of the ‘Tibetan Uprising Day’ which falls on March 10.

The Tibet Museum under the information and international relations wing of the CTA unveiled a photo exhibition titled ’60 year of Tibetan Resistance’ featuring a factual account of photographs captured since 10 March uprising in 1959. Minister of Finance Karma Yeshi said, “This photo exhibition uncovers the blatant lies and propaganda of the Chinese government.”

The exhibition is curated by Tibet Museum staff Tenzin Rabjam and intern Lodoe Tsomo. The exhibition also hosted a panel discussion with former political prisoner Lobsang Yonden, Ngawang Woeber and Dukthen Kyi from the Human Rights Desk of Department of Information and International relations.

Near the Tibet Museum, officiating President of the CTA, Karma Yuthok Gelek and Speaker of the Tibetan Parliament in Exile, Pema Jugney led the prayer ceremony hosted by the CTA for the victims of the 1989 peaceful demonstrators in occupied Tibet’s Lhasa city that were brutally cracked down by China. Thousands were said to have perished in the aftermath, according to Tibetan sources.

Yuthok who also heads the Department of Religion and Culture said that it is important to recall and highlight the sacrifices of the peaceful demonstrators of 1989 and that the protests were a spontaneous response to the imposition of repressive measures by Chinese authorities in Tibet.

March 10, a day that sparked uprisings in Tibet is synonymous with resistance of the Tibetan people against Chinese rule in occupied Tibet. Ahead of the sensitive uprising day’s anniversary, China has placed Tibet and particularly Lhasa city into a siege-like lockdown banning tourists and foreigners for more than a month.

Tibetan pilgrims and businessmen from other parts of Tibetan in Lhasa have also been rigorously questioned and their movements monitored to avoid uprisings like those seen in 1959, 1989 and 2008.
