DHARAMSHALA, Feb. 28: Monlam Grand Dictionary Project today began its 7th conference on Tibetan lexicography at the Library of Tibetan Works and Archives (LTWA) here. Editors and representatives from monasteries across India attended the conference.

Monlam Tibetan IT is a research-oriented IT center, which specializes in research of Tibetan language and literature started by Geshe Lobsang Monlam. In 2005, the first Monlam Tibetan font was released and subsequently, in the year 2006, 2009, 2010 updated and much-improved versions of the Monlam Tibetan font were successfully released.

In 2011 Monlam Tibetan and Monlam Tibetan Dictionary was released in Android Operating System which benefitted a large number of people as it paved ways for the usage of the Tibetan Dictionary.

Geshe Lhakdor spoke at the conference today as a special guest followed by a talk by the Monlam Editor Ju Tenkyong.

Tibetan leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama had advised that a separate Tibetan IT research center need to be established, as it will greatly help to preserve and flourish the Tibetan language and literature. On 20th April 2012, Monlam Tibetan IT Research Centre was founded in Dharamsala. On December 19, 2016, the first Monlam Grand Dictionary was inaugurated by His Holiness Dalai Lama at Sera Jey monastery. Other high lamas and exile leadership participated in the ceremony.

Editor Ju Tenkyong said, “We also developed Software on Tibetan-Chinese Dictionary, Chinese-Tibetan Dictionary, Tibetan Astrology and Tibetan Library Management System. We came to know that the Tibetan Dictionary was created by the ancient scholars in the early times. Due to the historical crisis and global changes, we are still running short of a complementary lexicography.”

“On the basic experience earned from six years of working on the dictionary, and diverse views from very learned Tibetan scholars and comparison with standard English lexicography, we created a Tibetan lexicography which is parallel to the international recognized lexicography,” he added.

The first Tibetan lexicography was published and distributed in December 2018.

Monlam Dictionary Project Director Geshe Lobsang Monlam said, "Monlam Tibetan Grand Dictionary was also introduced at the Institute national des langue’s et civilizations Orientale’s in France, Oxford University, The University of London, University of Virginia, Columbia University, Harvard University, Apple and Google."

Currently, there are three million and seven hundred thousand users of Monlam Tibetan Grand Dictionary on Windows/Mac OS/Android in occupied Tibet, according to Lobsang.
