DHARAMSHALA, Jan. 18: A prominent Tibetan Buddhist monastery and an Indian University have signed an educational pact to collaborate on research and study in the fields of ancient Buddhist knowledge, particularly from the Nalanda tradition as well as modern science.

South India based Drepung Loseling monastery in Mundgod Tibetan settlement and Goa University have reportedly signed a Memorandum of Understanding on January 14. Geshe Lobsang Samten, Abbot of Drepung Loseling Monastery and Vice-Chancellor Prof Varun Sahni, Goa University represented their educational establishments during the signing ceremony.

Abbot Geshe Lobsang Samten said, “The academic exchange with Goa University underlines our commitment towards fulfilling His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s vision to revive the ancient Nalanda tradition in contemporary India.”

“This agreement will also serve the purpose to further strengthen our knowledge and understanding in the field of modern science,” the Abbot further said.

The Tibetan leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama has repeatedly spoken to affirm his commitment to revive the ancient Indian knowledge from the Nalanda tradition that originated in India and later spread to Tibet. He has said that the age old teachings are more relevant in the modern world.

The MoU will see the two educational institutes develop tailored programmes and be honoured for a time of three years and can be extended should the collaborative efforts bear positive results.

Drepung Loseling Monastery is among the three great monasteries and universities of the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism, the other two being Sera and Ganden. Like many of the Tibetan monasteries that were decimated in the wake of the Mao led cultural revolution in occupied Tibet, the Drepung has been successfully rebuilt in exile India.

Other Indian educational institutes and exile Tibetan establishments signing educational pacts include Library of Tibetan Works and Archives and Central University of Himachal Pradesh who signed a memorandum of understanding to collaborate on common Tibetan and Indian themes last January.
