DHARAMSHALA, Jan. 11: The Chief Planning Commissioner of CTA, Dr Kunchok Tsondue took the opportunity today after the SARD - DOF conference to address the public opposition to the kind of language used in the Tibetan Demographic Survey -2019 form.

He acknowledged that there were impassioned discussion and aspersion cast on the use of English language in the form for Tibetans living abroad and the inclusion of words ‘Overseas Tibetan’ in some forms.

Tsondue said the Planning Commission is compelled to use the English language in the form for Tibetans not living in India, Nepal and Bhutan because of a poor grasp of the language in the group and the resulting risk of collecting less than accurate information from the survey.

“Upon seeing the sentiments expressed on the use of the words, ‘Overseas Tibetan,’ in the media and after receiving letters from Representatives of offices of Tibet, we are withdrawing the usage of the specific words,” said the chief planning commissioner.

He added that the aim was purely to avoid duplicating headcounts and implored Tibetans everywhere to take part in the survey as it would help the administration in formulating policies and programs.
