DHARAMSHALA, JAN. 5: A Tibetan photojournalist working at The Indian Express as photographer has been awarded the prestigious Ramnath Goenka Award for excellence in news photography.

Tashi Tobgyal accepted the award from Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh at an event on Friday in New Delhi. His powerful images documenting the life and death of those who keep our cities clean – manual scavengers and sewage workers - bagged the award.

" Well, Its always nice to be recognized, appreciated and awarded for your work. Acknowledgement does a lot to inspire and encourage more. Indeed, I have been fortunate to have been judged and felicitated by the finest in our industry. It's my blessing", Tashi told Phayul.

This is not the first time Tashi's work got recognition and award. He was honored with the 'national award for excellence in journalism' by the President of India in 2015 in photo feature category for his 12 day coverage of the 2014 Kashmir floods.

The Express Group instituted the Ramnath Goenka Excellence in Journalism Awards in 2005 as part of the centenary year celebrations of its founder, Ramnath Goenka. The awards aim to celebrate excellence in journalism, recognise courage and commitment and showcase the outstanding contributions of journalists from across the country.

"The most prestigious annual event in the Indian media calendar is a recognition of the highest standards of journalism. Over the years, the winners have produced work — often in the face of political and economic pressures — that generates and sustains public trust in the media and impacts the lives of people," the Express Group says on its website.

Tashi who has been in the profession for the past twelve years described his job simply as “something akin to religion” and has completed many well received photo features such as the ‘Inside the Death Valley, The Kedarnath Massacre’, ‘The Inside Story: Rat hole Coal Mining in the Jaintia Hills and ‘Reporting via Panorama’ among others.

Tashi was born in Sonada, Darjeeling and studied at the St. Joseph North Point School. After his schooling, he joined the Aligarh Muslim University before starting his stint as a professional photographer.
