DHARAMSHALA, Dec. 28: Thousands of pilgrims and devotees attended a prayer ceremony held at the Mahabodhi Temple in Bodh Gaya today to commemorate 30 years since the death of the 10th Panchen Lama.

The ceremony, organized by Tashi Lhunpo monastery, was presided over by Ganden Tripa, the 42nd Kyabgon Gongma Trizin and Ganden Trisur Rinpoche among other high lamas.

His Holiness the Dalai Lama, in a 5-min video released by the office of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, spoke few words about Panchen Lama at the request of North America Committee for the observation of Thank you 10th Panchen Lama year.

The 10th Panchen Lama passed away in 1989 in Shigatse, Tibet.

His Holiness the Dalai Lama recalled the contribution of the Panchen Lama lineage and observed that both the 5th and the 6th Panchen Lama made significant contributions to Buddha Dharma.

The 10th Panchen Lama, Choekyi Gyaltsen was born just three years after His Holiness the Dalai Lama but died 51.

“He had no dearth of courage and spirit during tough times. Despite facing lots of trouble, he worked hard for Buddha Dharma and for the happiness and well-being of Tibetans whenever he found the time,” said His Holiness the Dalai Lama.

Attributing his early death to lack of Tibetans' collective fortune, His Holiness said, “I am certain that if he had stayed longer, it would have been very beneficial.”

The ceremony also saw a book launch by Lodhen Gyurmey on Chadrel Rinpoche, the former abbot of the Tashi Lhunpo monastery and the leader of the search party for the 11th Panchen Lama.

Referring to phenomena of more than one reincarnation in the case of 11th Panchen Lama and 17th Karmapa, His Holiness the Dalai Lama said it is not unheard of to have more than one reincarnations. He cited the example of Jamyang Khyentse Wangpo, the founder of the Rimé movement, who had five reincarnations.

His Holiness concluded by saying that anyone working for Buddha Dharma with knowledge and application, notwithstanding the origin, is good and something he always prays for.
