5.8 magnitude earthquake hits Shigatse

DHARAMSHALA, December 24: A 5.8-magnitude earthquake has shaken the Shedthong Monzong (Ch. Xaitongmoin county) in Shigatse city in central Tibet in the wee hours of Monday, according to the China Earthquake Networks Centre (CENC).

The earthquake with a focal depth of 8 Kilometres has its epicenter 344 kilometers from Lhasa City, Chinese official media reported.

No reports of casualties have been received by the authorities except for cracks in rural houses and animal sheds.

Public communication remains stable as the situation in the remote villages remains to be ascertained.

According to the assessment of the Earthquake Emergency Search and Rescue Center of the Emergency Management Department, it is estimated that the earthquake is unlikely to cause casualties, reported official Chinese media site Tibet.cn


According to the catalogue of the China Seismological Network, there were 50 earthquakes of magnitude 3 or above in the past 5 years around the epicentre, said the report.
