DHARAMSHALA, Nov. 30: The Tibetan Centre for Human Rights and Democracy organized a public event at hotel Tibet, Dharamshala this morning to mark the 30th year since the sentencing of the “Group of Ten” Drepung monks for translating, printing and distributing Universal Declaration of Human Rights’s (UDHR) in Tibetan in Lhasa, Tibet.

Mr. Ngawang Woeber and Mr. Ngawang Delek, two of the three chief guests invited at the event, were both involved in the wave of protests that took place between 1987-1989 as a member of “Group of 21” protestors. The third chief guest was Mrs. Lhakpa Dolma, wife of Jamphel Monlam, a member of “Group of Ten.”

Members of “Group of Ten” were sentenced to varying prison terms ranging from 5-19 years, one of whom succumbed to injury from torture in prison.
The chief guests spoke about their involvement in the protests and the importance of UDHR in the Tibetan freedom struggle movement.

Office of the High Commission for Human Right (OHCHR) launched a website to observe the 70th year of its founding that contains multimedia illustrations of the 30 articles of UDHR.

English researcher at TCHRD, Tenzin Dawa said “We translated the major crux of the OHCHR’s website content into Tibetan, with additional material that includes international laws, history and photos of the ‘Group of Ten’ and other human rights awareness activities carried out by TCHRD.”

It is surprising that OHCHR’s website doesn’t carry anything on Tibet owing to possible pressure from China.

Series of videos on OHCHR’s YouTube channel of people taking pledge on respecting each other’s rights doesn’t feature any videos in Tibetan language. The new website in Tibetan is called www.tibetanhumanrightsdeclaration.org
