Dharamshala, Nov.28: The famous American linguist, scientist and social critic Professor Noam Chomsky joins the list of about 30 scholars across the world boycotting Marxists conferences in China.

The boycott started after China arrested and detained students from its top universities for organizing pro workers groups. Factory workers in a Jasic Technology factory in Shenzhen, the southern manufacturing hub received students support towards their effort to unionize in the last four months that preceded the arrests. Many are still in detention.

The PRC sees the alliance of workers and students as a major threat.

Elaborating his stand on the matter, Chomsky wrote, “To continue to participate in… officially sponsored Marxism-related events means we would stay complicit in the Chinese government’s game. Leftist scholars around the world should join boycott of such conferences and events.”

The Second World Congress on Marxism was held in Peking University in May this year that also marked the 200th anniversary of Marx’s birth. Marxism-Leninism was the first official ideology of the Communist Party of China (CPC) which has undergone changes and seen various interpretations over the years by the Chinese government.

Many professors associated with the likes of University of Arizona, Yale University, Cornell University, and Penn State University among others spoke out against the Marxism related conferences and events.
