[Tuesday, November 27, 2018 19:59]
By Tenzin Sangmo

Dharamshala, Nov. 28: China recently completed the construction of the world’s highest power line grid in Tibet that went into operation last week.

Constructed in the Tibetan Autonomous Region, the power line touches a height of 5300 meters at its highest with Tower 8L196 which is the world’s highest 500-kv transmission tower.

China plans to provide power supply to the railway services between Lhasa and Nyingchi with this power line.

The project that started in April 2017 and is said to be completed in just a year as the weather conditions at that height meant that construction could be taken up for only six months in a year.

An estimated total of $ 2.3 billion was spent to build and upgrade more than dozens of 110-kv substations and transmission lines that stretches through 2738 km.

State Grid Qinghai Electric Power Company, a branch of State Grid Co., Ltd. carried out the construction. This is part of Central Tibet Grid connection.

According to Financial Times, as Tibet saw rising power consumption in recent years, hitting more than 4.1 billion kilowatts, China began working on the project, which will benefit over 1,00,000 people.
