, Nov. 7: A high-level meeting in New Delhi was reportedly convened to discuss the recent meeting between the two rival claimants of the Karmapa title ahead of National Security Adviser Ajit Doval’s proposed visit to China.

The former Indian intelligence big-wig is scheduled to visit China towards the end of November for the Special Representative (SR) talks with State Councillor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi.

Doval who is the NSA to Prime Minister Modi convened a meeting of the Tibet study Group to discuss the recent meet between Karmapa Ogyen Trinley Dorje and Karmapa Trinley Thaye Dorje on October 11, sources said.

The Tibet Study Group comprising of officials from various Indian intelligence agencies such as Intelligence Bureau (IB), Research and Analysis Wing (R&AW) and other government bodies such Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) and Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) is formed specifically to discuss developments around Ogyen Trinley Dorje who escaped from Tibet in 2000.

Last month, a joint statement from the two main claimants of the title to the foremost religious head of the Karma Kagyu lineage of Tibetan Buddhism announced that they have met in France in a bid to “heal divisions” and “strengthen and preserve” the lineage.

Rumtek monastery, also called Dharmachakra centre in Sikkim, considered as the main seat of Karma Kagyu lineage in exile is also the focal point of this sectarian tension between the two organizations, Tsurphu Labrang (supporting Ogyen Trinley Dorje) and Karmapa Charitable trust (supporting Thaye Dorje). The Karmapa controversy is played out in the Indian court as the two rival parties supporting the two candidacies have reached an impasse earlier. Exile Tibetans welcomed the meeting in anticipation of solving the differences that has plagued the lineage for decades.

Many say that Karmapa Ogyen Trinley Dorje acquiring the passport of Commonwealth of Dominica and his subsequent application for an Indian visa is another key issue. The Tibetan religious figure Karmapa Ogyen Trinley Dorje has said that he had acquired Commonwealth of Dominica’s passport for ease of movement in the future to carry out his religious duties. The prominent Tibetan religious figure posted a video message through his official Instagram account on October 28.
