Around 35 TYC activists detained after protests against Chinese delegation in Delhi

DHARAMSALA, Oct. 23: Activists from the largest Tibetan NGO of the exile diaspora today came out in numbers to protest a visiting Chinese delegation led by China’s Minister of Public Security Zhao Kezhi and other high-level Ministers from the Tibetan Autonomous Region in the national capital New Delhi.

Around 35 TYC activists now remain detained at the Chanakyapuri police station after protesting near the entrance of the heavily manned Chinese consulate in New Delhi earlier this morning. In a widely circulated clip in social media sites, young Tibetans were seen shouting slogans calling for “free Tibet”, “No Human rights in Tibet”.

TYC said that it expresses serious concern on the current ‘critical situation’ in Tibet and urged Indian leaders including Prime Minister Modi to bring up the issue of Tibetan freedom with their Chinese counterparts during the meet. “While we recognize that this meeting is a great opportunity for India and China to push for progress, we strongly urge Indian leaders to hold the Chinese leaders responsible for their actions in Tibet,” the activist group said.

Exile Tibetans say that over 150 Tibetans have self immolated in protest against the Chinese rule and its repressive policies that is aimed at destroying the Tibetan culture and identity in its homeland. Such claims are backed by international observers and governments including the United States as recent as last month, pointing to the absence of freedom of speech and religious freedom in occupied Tibet.

President of the activist group Tenzing Jigme said, “Tibetans remain forever grateful to this great nation for the kindness and support it has shown to the Tibetan people and the opportunities for Tibetans to voice their concerns for the situation inside Tibet”.

TYC said that PM Modi and Indian leaders should confront the Chinese Government on the issue of Tibet and use diplomatic measures to send a strong message that human rights and human lives are as important as trade and economy.

The high-level meeting on bilateral security cooperation saw Asia’s two largest military and economic powers ink pacts on “areas of counter-terrorism, organized crimes, drug control and other such relevant areas,” India’s home ministry said.
