Tibetan Buddhist master awarded Italy's highest honour

DHARAMSHALA, Sep. 11: Tibetan Buddhist master, Professor Namkhai Norbu Rinpoche has been awarded Italy’s highest recognition, "Commander of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic" on Monday.

In a ceremony held at Council Chamber of the City of Acridosso, the Prefect of Grosseto, Cinzia Torraco, on behalf of the President of the Italian Republic presented Prof Namkhai Norbu Rinpoche the award. The honour was bestowed to the Tibetan master on the proposal of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, sources said.

Mayor of Arcidosso Jacopo Marini said, “The master has dedicated his entire life to cultural research, to deepening spiritual and philosophical themes. He has always pursued the goal and the dream of peace and his presence in our territory is a great honour. This honour makes him worthy and we are proud that he was awarded this recognition by the President of the Republic “.

The Buddhist master was recognised for his contribution in the field of letters, arts, economy and in the engagement of public offices and activities carried out for social, philanthropic and humanitarian purposes.

The founder of the community of Merigar and one of Dzogchen lineage’s leading master, Chögyal Namkhai Norbu Rinpoche is responsible for introducing Tibetan language and literature to Italy since the 1960’s.

Through his dedicated pursuits in the last few decades, he has established Dzogchen communities in Italy, the United States, South America, Australia and Russia as well as the International Shang-Shung Institute to preserve the cultural traditions of Tibet.
