DHARAMSHALA, JULY 4: His Holiness the Dalai Lama today visited the Leh Jhokhang temple where devotees and followers welcomed him in traditional Ladakhi style. He told the gathering that shrines and monasteries were not as important as the teachings of the Buddha.

He said that the Buddhists in Ladakh must pay attention in promoting secular ethics including the ancient Indian tradition of Ahimsa. He said the ancient Indian tradition and values must be taught without touching the religious aspect.

The Tibetan leader arrived in Leh yesterday for a series of events including teachings in the region.

His Holiness will give teachings on Shantideva’s A Guide to the Bodhisatva’s Way of Life (Tib: Chodjug) from July 10 - 12 and participate in the Yarcho Chenmo-the annual ‘Summer Buddhist Council’ of philosophical debate and discussion – from July 18 to 20 at Samstanling Gonpa Sumoor in Nubra besides teachings in Nubra as well as in Leh at Shiwaitsel teaching ground.

The Dalai Lama is widely revered by the Buddhist majority population as well as respected and loved by the growing Muslim populace in the region.
