DHARAMSHALA, April 11: Tibetan leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama who is based in the state of Himachal Pradesh for the last 58 years have expressed sadness over the accident of a school bus that claimed 27 people's lives on Monday in Malkwal near the Himachal-Punjab border.

The Tibetan leader wrote in an emotional letter to the state Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur that having lived in the state for so long, he felt an, “affinity for its people” and that, “When incidents like this occur, it is as if a calamity has befallen all of us.”

The letter addressed to CM Thakur on April 10, stated, “I am deeply saddened by reports of yesterday’s bus crash near Nurpur in which 23 of the 27 people who were killed were school children,” he wrote.

“These children were their families’ pride and joy, their hope for the future, as such children are all across the country. It is a tragedy that they should have died on their way home from school. I would like to offer my condolences to those families who have lost loved ones and to others affected by this unfortunate accident,” the Dalai Lama further wrote.

The Tibetan leader’s trust has also made a donation to the Chief Minister fund for Relief Work.

The school bus accident has claimed the lives of 27 people including 23 school children after the driver of the vehicle reportedly lost control and fell of a cliff. On Tuesday, the nearby village held a mass cremation for the deceased children.
