DHARAMSHALA, Feb. 9: A Tibetan monk who had served six years in Chinese prison was released last month with disability due to torture in prison, sources said.

Geshe Tsewang Namgyal, a monk of Draggo monastery, has suffered potentially irreversible injury to his leg and lower body, and can’t walk without support. He was released on Jan. 24. “But he is not able to walk normally now. The people in Draggo county are afraid to talk openly about his condition,” a Tibetan source in exile told RFA, on condition of anonymity citing sources in the region.

Geshe Tsewang was arrested on Jan. 23, 2012, following a peaceful demonstration in Draggo during the Lunar New Year. The mass demonstration by Tibetans were fired upon with live ammunition and as many as six people were reported to have died from the firing by Chinese authorities.

“Geshe Namgyal, Tulku Lobsang Tenzin of Gochen monastery, a businessman named Thinley, and an accountant named Dralha were arrested in Chengdu on charges of having taken part in the protest. They were later sentenced to prison terms from five to seven years, and their families only learned of their sentencing weeks afterward,” the same source said.

The 2012 peaceful mass demonstration in Draggo in Sichuan Province resulted in death of 6 Tibetans and detention of over 35 Tibetans.
