French Senate group demands fair trial for Tashi Wangchuk
[Thursday, January 25, 2018 18:55]
By Tenzin Dharpo

DHARAMSHALA, Jan. 25: The Tibet Group in the French senate on Tuesday issued a declaration of support for Tibetan language rights advocate Tashi Wangchuk asking China to give him a “fair and transparent” trial.

Earlier this month, Tashi’s trial at the Yushu Intermediate People's Court in Yushu Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Qinghai Province ended without a verdict. The 32-year-old education rights activist was arrested on January 2016 and charged with ‘inciting separatism’ in March 2016, following a New York Times reportage about him pursuing legal resorts to claim rights prescribed in the Chinese Constitution. He has been held in Yushu Detention Centre in Kyegudo since his arrest.

The declaration dated Jan. 23, read, “The members of the International Information Tibet Group support asks for a fair and transparent trial of Mr. Tashi Wangchuk and urge the People’s Republic of China to implement a judgment process that is constant with international legal standards, with the presence of observers at his trial.”

“We also insist in particular that Tashi Wangchuk enjoys access to a lawyer of his choice and that he be given access to his family on a regular basis,” it further added.

The declaration of support which is in French was signed by 14 French senators including Michel Raison (President), Annick Billon (Vice-President), Patricia Morhiet-Richaud (Vice-President) and André Gattolin (Vice-President), among others.

Tashi Wangchuk’s lawyer Liang Xiaojun said the Chinese prosecutor produced the 9-minute New York Time’s video reportage, ‘A Tibetan’s Journey for Justice’ as the main evidence against the Tibetan activist who was calling for the rights prescribed within the Chinese constitution.
