DHARAMSHALA, November 27: The Tibetan spiritual leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s office Gaden Phodrang has issued a clarification over Lord Buddha's background following his remark over Buddha’s birthplace in a response to a question from a student at DAV Central Public School in Meerut on October 16.

The Office of His Holiness the Dalai Lama stated that the Tibetan spiritual leader meant no disrespect towards his ‘Nepalese brothers and sisters’.

“Like Buddhists everywhere, he wholeheartedly accepts that the Buddha's birthplace was Lumbini,” Gaden Phodrang said, “What he wanted to emphasize in contemporary terms is the importance of understanding what the Buddha taught and the scope of his influence throughout Asia. It is universally acknowledged that India, the land of the Noble Ones, is where the Buddha achieved enlightenment and subsequently gave profound teachings.”

The office of the exile Tibetan spiritual leader issued the clarification with a hope that it would clear up any misunderstanding, especially in Nepalese media. The clarification follows media reports in Nepal and Dharmodaya Sabha, the National Buddhist Organization of Nepal, voicing their discontent over the remark.

Dharmodaya Sabha had urged the Tibetan leader to ‘immediately stop spreading such misleading information about the birthplace of Gautam Buddha’ while some, including Nepali Actor Rajesh Hamal and Ramit Dhungana, have also expressed their reservations through the social media.
