DHARAMSHALA, November 22: The Tibetan Delek Hospital and Men-Tsee-Khang (TMAI) in collaboration with Dr. Rajendra Prasad Government Medical College (RPGMC), Tanda, organized a blood donation camp at Men-Tsee-Khang college hall in Gangchen Kyishong today.
Dr. Tenzin Tsewang of Delek Hospital said that awareness about benefits of donating blood is very limited in the Tibetan community. He said, “A person can donate blood thrice in a year and an individual gets healthier with a lot of health benefits as well with no adverse affect.”
Following a successful blood donation camp at College for Higher Tibetan Studies, Sarah last year with RPG Medical College also known as Tanda Hospital, Dr. Tsewang feels that such joint initiatives help improve the working relationship between the hospitals since Delek hospital refer many of their critical patients to Tanda Hospital.
“I am a healthy individual and there are many who are in need of blood due to various illness and reasons. I am glad knowing that I can help them by donating my blood,” said Thupten Wangdu, a student of Men-Tsee-Khang College.
Tashi Dekyi, a CTA employee donating blood for the first time said, “Of all the charities, I find donating blood the most charitable. We never know when someone needs blood in case of any emergencies. Hence, the blood donated today will become a saving grace for those in need.” She also added that a small step of donating blood could prove a new life in the future.
According to Dr. Tsewang, the plasma from the donation will be replaced within 24 hours. However, total replacement of red blood cells takes to about 2 months. Hence, an individual is capable of donating blood thrice a year.
