China under Xi ushering “an era of expansionism”, says President Sangay
[Saturday, November 04, 2017 19:31]
By Tenzin Dharpo

DHARAMSHALA, Nov. 4: The President of the Tibetan exile government known officially as the Central Tibetan Administration, Dr. Lobsang Sangay said that China under Xi Jinping is poised to embark on “an era of expansionism” under the guise of economic and political leverage. The CTA President was speaking on ‘Role of India and The Future of Tibet’, at Guwahati University on Friday.

“The reality of Confucianist China’s expansionist design is being reflected all over the world today especially in India and Southeast Asia. The controversy over the Scarborough shoals in the Philippines and the border disputes in Arunachal and Ladakh are just some of the examples of their expansionist design,” CTA run Tibet.net quoted him as saying. The Doklam row and ‘Belt and Road’ initiative, he said were the most recent examples of China’s aggressive expansionist ambitions.

Sangay said that the world has a reliable blueprint in Tibet when it comes to China’s modus operandi. “What has happened in Tibet sixty years ago is a blueprint of what is happening around the world today. China has come into Tibet singing a happy song of peace and prosperity before occupying Tibet with brutal military force,” he said.

“It all started with the building of a road. With the road came trucks followed by guns and tanks. And before we knew it, Tibet was occupied. Now we see China building roads, co-opting business and political leaders with bribes and kickbacks around the world. This is all reminiscent of what has happened in Tibet,” he further said.

The Harvard educated statesman also said that Tibet was the springboard to China’s current position in the world and that if the global community intervened then, China’s meteoritic rise and its influences could have been checked.

“Not speaking up for Tibet was not only morally wrong but also a costly mistake. Had the international community stood up for Tibet, China wouldn’t have thought of itself as an invincible power today,” he added.

Xi Jinping earlier this month at the 19th National People’s Congress cemented his second term as the irrefutable leader of China consolidating power and titles, leading to many saying his reach and legacy could surpass the father of the Chinese communism, Mao Zedong.
