DHARAMSHALA, Sept. 11: The exiled Tibetan leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama began his 15-day European schedule yesterday at Derry, Northern Ireland where he attended the 20th anniversary of a children’s welfare organization. The Dalai Lama also attended the 10th anniversary of the charity back in 2007.

The Tibetan leader met his friend and founder of the NGO, Children in Crossfire Richard Moore describing him as his “hero”. At the Millennial Forum, the Dalai Lama said, “I often talk about compassion, but I wonder if I had undergone the same experience as you, if I wouldn’t have lost my temper.

“You’ve (Moore) shown such inner strength and your work to establish Children in Crossfire shows what it really is to be human. What you have experienced transformed your life. Instead of provoking your anger, it has strengthened your compassion.”

The 82 year old reiterated that human beings have an intrinsic sway with compassion and that each must invest and tap into that potential. “When I heard scientists say that basic human nature is compassionate, I felt it was a sign of hope. Just as we preserve our health by observing physical hygiene, we can protect our inner well-being by tackling our destructive emotions and cultivating emotional hygiene,” he told the gathering.

The Nobel laureate who has been a voice for global peace said that “dialogue and respect” are foundations to resolution of any problem and that divisive actions will only lead to further differences.

He said, “I have some reservations about the slogan ‘American first’ and the US’s withdrawal from the Paris accord. It seems to me that the natural disasters we’ve witnessed in recent days have been trying to teach us something about climate change.”

Today, the octogenarian Tibetan leader attended a Children in Crossfire conference on the theme ‘Educating the Heart’. He will be heading next to Frankfurt, Germany where he will give a public talk on 'Global Ethics - Shared Values' and attend a conference on 'Western Science and Buddhist Perspectives' to be held at Jahrhunderthalle.
