DHARAMSHALA, July 25: The parents of Tibetan teen who self-immolated in Varanasi have urged Tibetans not to resort to self immolation saying the youth must fight for the cause through education and non violence. The parents of Tenzin Choeying whose body arrived here amid pouring rain this morning were speaking to the media as Tibetans and supporters paid their last respects to the departed soul at the Tibetan Youth Congress office.

“Be it an old-aged Tibetan or an infant, we all have a collective responsibility. As for the future generation, I urge them to continue fighting for Tibetan cause by educating themselves thoroughly because it is unfortunate to lose even a single Tibetan life,” said Ngawang Khedup, father of the deceased.

Tashi Yangzom, Choeying’s mother urged the future generations to refrain from harming self and stressed on the importance of preserving the Tibetan cultural heritage and language.

The president of the Central Tibetan Administration Lobsang Sangay paid his last respects to the teen self immolator and met with his parents at the TYC office earlier today.

Tibetan activist and Choeying’s cousin Tenzin Tsundue said that Choeying’s last words were ‘Bod, Bod’ (Tibet, Tibet).

Tenzin Choeying, 19, from Dhondenling Tibetan settlement in Kollegal, carried out the fiery act outside the men's hostel on July 14 during a speech by Sikyong Lobsang Sangay on the campus. He was protesting China's illegal occupation of Tibet and their repressive policies.

Choeying passed away on July 22 at around 4:50 p.m. (IST) at Safdarjung Hospital in New Delhi after succumbing to the burns. He was airlifted from Varanasi on July 20. However, his condition deteriorated the next day as his burn percentage had reached 90 percent.

All the Tibetan shops here remained closed for the day as a mark of respect for Choeying who will be cremated tomorrow morning after a prayer service at Lhagyal-Ri.
