DHARAMSHALA, July 14: The Tibetan spiritual leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama today expressed his condolence over the passing away of fellow Nobel Laureate and Chinese human rights advocate Liu Xiaobo at the age of 61.

“I am deeply saddened to learn that fellow Nobel Laureate Liu Xiaobo has passed away while undergoing a lengthy prison sentence. I offer my prayers and condolences to his wife, Liu Xia and to other members of his family,” said the Dalai Lama in a statement.

Liu was out on a medical parole after being diagnosed with terminal liver cancer and was being treated at First Affiliated Hospital of China Medical University in Shenyang.

According to the statement issued by Bureau of Justice, Shenyang City has announced that he death was due to multiple organ failure.

“Although he is no longer living, the rest of us can best pay honor to Liu Xiaobo by carrying forward the principles he has long embodied, which would lead to a more harmonious, stable and prosperous China,” the exiled Tibetan spiritual leader said.

The 1989 Nobel Peace Laureate also added that he believes that Liu Xiaobo’s unceasing efforts in the cause of freedom will bear fruit before long’.

Since winning the Nobel Peace Prize in 2010, his wife, who was with him in his last days had been kept under house arrest without any contact with outside world.

Liu, a former professor of literature at Beijing Normal University, was arrested numerous times – he was jailed for 21 months for his role in 1989 Tiananmen Square protest; for three years in 1996 for his human rights activities; and in 2008 for drafting a pro-democracy manifesto called Charter 08.

The 61-year-old activist was sentenced to 11 years’ imprisonment in 2009 for ‘inciting subversion of state power’ following his involvement in drafting a petition known as ‘Charter 08’.

Liu was a strong supporter of Tibetan cause, had authored a number of articles and was instrumental in drafting the 12-point suggestions submitted to the Chinese authorities in 2008 on how to resolve the long-standing issue of Tibet.
