DHARAMSHALA, June 23: A Tibetan has reportedly died after slitting open his throat near the Jhokhang temple in Lhasa earlier today calling out slogans such as ‘Tibetans don’t have rights and freedom’ and ‘we want freedom’, according to the Voice of Tibet.

According to a source, the incident took place around 10 a.m. (local time) near Jokhang and soon after the local police and the security personnel arrived at the scene and covered the spot from four sides using large clothes.

“They covered the spot with a navy blue sheet in their attempt to conceal the incident. Moreover, the officials blocked the Tibetans nearby from approaching the spot and also told them that it was a case of suicide and not a protest,” the source said.

In a photo reportedly taken minutes after the authorities arrived, few uniformed officials can be seen holding large clothes attempting to block any view and guarding the surroundings.

Due to immediate restriction by the local police and security, the identity of the Tibetan remains unknown as of now. However, the source confirmed that it was a layman and was assumed dead on the spot.
